Diet and Height Are Indicators of Cancer Risk
What people eat and how tall they grow are indicators of cancer risk claims a recent health report. Studies show that breastfeeding reduces the risk of cancer for mother and child, and tall people have a higher risk of cancer than shorter people. Researchers found evidence that factors such as hormones that cause the body to grow quickly may be involved in some cancers. They found that tallness is also probably linked to increased risk for ovarian, pancreatic and pre-menopausal cancer. While they stress that tall people are not destined to get cancer, they should take care to maintain healthy habits.
Americans tend to attribute cancer to factors over which they have no control and not to acknowledge the existence of any proven links to the disease - reflecting an 'everything causes cancer' mindset.' But Dr. Walter Willett, a nutrition expert at the Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts states that people need to think about cancer "as the product of many long-term influences, not as something that just happens."
Top recommendations for reducing the risk of cancer are:
- Maintain a healthy weight. Be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight.
- Exercise is also key. Be physically active as part of everyday life.
- Eat mostly plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables and grains, avoiding calorie-dense foods such as sugary drinks, and limiting red meat, alcohol and salt.
It should be noted that the meat industry quickly denounced the report claiming the "conclusions are extreme, unfounded and out of step with dietary guidelines."
Wow!!! What a great report
By the way, there is plenty of evidence in the initial U.S. Federal report in the 1970's and Marion Nestle was on that board and reported on this issue then and why red meat was found to be a big issue! So get over it red meat industry. People are more important than your bottom line!
You have a huge effect on your likelihood of cancer and should not be misled anymore. Unfortunately, many people concentrate on issues they cannot change and more importantly many of those issues are small at best.
